All Ages to Explore Playful Side

Visitors of all ages will be encouraged to explore their playful side at next month’s Ellerslie International Flower Show. The joint Christchurch City Council and City Care’s exhibition garden, Urban Active, is a 30m x 20m playground with a difference – it offers play options for both children and adults. Designed by the City Council and built by City Care Ltd, the garden has four rooms, creating separate spaces for children and adults to “keep playing all their life and keep fit”.

Selling Christchurch in Asia

Christchurch Airport chief executive Jim Boult, Christchurch mayor Bob Parker and a number of tourism and business representatives are to travel overseas in a bid to bring more tourists to the South Island. The delegation from Christchurch Airport, which includes the mayor’s wife, representatives of Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism and the Canterbury Development Corp, is heading to Asia to meet heads of airlines which could increase their current services to the city or start new ones.

Christchurch convention venue progress

Demolition of the quake-hit Christchurch Convention Centre is now under way but The Press reports that plans are afoot to bring convention business back into the city with the help of a $15 million expansion of the city’s Air Force Museum at Wigram. Air Force Museum director Therese Angelo said the original plans to enlarge the museum space by 4200sqm had been further extended to 6200sqm of extra space, more than doubling the museum building’s existing footprint of around 5000sqm. The expansion would be able to cater for 800
to 1000 people at a time.

Christchurch’s newest hotel will be first in CBD to re-open

In a major boost for tourism and business in Christchurch, the Rendezvous Hospitality Group will launch its Rendezvous Hotel brand to the city early next year. Rendezvous Hotel Christchurch, formerly known as The Marque Christchurch, will be the first of the central city hotels closed
following February’s quake to re-open its doors to guests.
